Garner State Park is where Texas keeps its summer romance. The Frio River running clear and cold under bald cypress trees, Old Baldy standing guard over the valley, and the pavilion where Texans have been dancing to the jukebox on summer nights since the 1940s. If your grandparents fell in love in Texas, there is a decent chance it happened here.
Because it does not feel like a venue. It feels like the best summer of your life. You can say your vows barefoot on the Frio, hike Old Baldy for a summit first look, float the river with your people after the ceremony, and end the night dancing at the pavilion like generations before you. Best for: river couples, small family-style weddings, and anyone whose love story involves a swimming hole. Best months: April through June for full spring water, September and October for warm water without the summer crowds.
Garner is the most popular state park in Texas for day visits, which means summer weekends are a reservation game and the famous spots fill by mid-morning. This is exactly why my couples marry at sunrise: the river to yourselves, the light at its best, and portraits done before the floaters show up. Day passes are required and sell out online in peak season, weddings need coordination with the park office, and the rules are different from every other park on my list. I handle all of that. It is literally the job.
Getting ready in a Hill Country cabin while the fog sits on the river. A first look under the cypress trees with the Frio glowing green behind you. Vows on the riverbank, just the two of you or with your favorite people barefoot in camp chairs. Old Baldy at golden hour if you want to earn a view, and the pavilion dance floor after dark if you want the full Garner tradition. Swimsuits under the wedding clothes optional but strongly encouraged.
License timing, park coordination, the timeline built around light and crowds, and five versions of the day planned before you pack, because Hill Country weather has opinions. “Even with having to go from Plan A, to Plan B, to Plan C due to the weather, Brit was there guiding us and calming our nerves.” That is Laura, a real bride, after a real day that worked anyway.
